Teaching our kids about politicians
FamilyPlace

I am sure our homes, coffeeshops, offices and streets will be talking about the "tree incident". When our kids hear about it they may just ask, "who are politicans?", here is one reply, share your ideas too:

Politicians are people who seek power from the people - some choose to manipulate the power given to them for their own good, while some truly seek to empower and bring forth better lives forth for the many. Education our kids that like anywhere there are good and not so good people. The key is responsibility, use the opportunity to share that being in power is a responsibility. Great learning opportunity for the kids - our future! Of course, after watching the news tell them what "NOT" to do.

If you any ideas, share with us.

Basic Rights in Jeopardy?
Chong Wai Leng

I meet parents with school-going kids all the time but this particular one is a very sad case I encountered from talking with a parent and her child recently:

8-year-old girl of mixed parentage attending a national school - "I hate school. I hate my teacher because she hits me and makes me do things I don't wanna!"

This bright little girl who speaks perfect American English (a phenomena arising from the advent of paid tv!) sticks out like a sore thumb in a school that does not tolerate racial or religious differences. She is made to feel tainted and impure and extreme measures are employed to make her comply with language and religious practices in the school. She, along with the rest of the children, are being indoctrinated by the teachers that the other races are impure and hence they should not be accepted or befriended. She breaks down crying every time she relates such incidences that happen at her school to her mother.

Interesting site, do check it out!

One of the things I have been doing very often nowadays is sharing social, political and political discussions with my children. The media gives us a lot of such opportunities. Although they are only 11 & 12 years, I feel these discussions, done without hatred or anger, are being understood and are important for a couple of reasons.
